Rescue Data from an Infected USB Drive with Ubuntu 16.04

In this Commix and More video, we are going to backup and restore the data from a USB flash drive that has been infected by a virus, trojan or worm that hides its contents. Most windows computers are always bombarded by numerous virus, worm, malware and trojan attacks. That is why windows users cannot live without a built-in or third party antivirus software. In Linux, although not 100%, their are minute attacks to its security and stability. In this video, we are going to use an Ubuntu based operating system, Eskwela OS, and Gparted to recover the files and format the USB flash disk making it clean from any infection.

For this to work, you need to have a working Linux Operating System (here it is based on Ubuntu) and the flash disk that you want to format.

Here are the steps:
1. Inspect the contents of the USB Portable Storage.
2. Try to check for malicious files. Specifically delete the following: autorun.inf, IndexVolume..., desktop.ini (not limited to these files)
3. Once you have checked it, create a backup folder in your Ubuntu system.
4. Run Gparted. You can install gparted using this command in the terminal: sudo apt-get install gparted.
5. Look for your USB flash disk (Be careful not to format your hard drive) 😊
6. Delete the current partition on your flash disk, add a new partition. The new partition can be a FAT32 filesystem.
7. Once Gparted has done formatting the drive, just copy the backed up files to the clean USB flash drive.
